COELIAC DISEASE
Coeliac disease is caused by an abnormal intestinal immune and allergy response to the protein gluten. Gluten is found wheat and other grains. It occurs in genetically predisposed individuals combined with inflammation environmental factors.
Some of these environmental factors include viral or bacterial infection, excessive stress and presence of other autoimmune conditions.
Coeliac is considered a permanent disease once exposed. It can predispose the sufferer into the development of other autoimmune diseases.
If it is not well managed, malnutrition and ill health will result, should the sufferer continue to consume gluten.
Signs and symptoms:
Altered bowel habits and diarrhoea are common.
Anaemia
Fatigue
Weight loss
Occasionally undiagnosed coeliac sufferers do not display these common classical symptoms.
Atypical symptoms include Dermatitis, Arthritis, and Osteoporosis.
Dietary and Natural Medicine Recommendations:
A strict gluten free diet is essential.
When Coeliac Disease is initially diagnosed, a Dairy/lactose free diet will be necessary for a period of time, whilst the gut wall is being restored.
Addressing the micro flora balance and taking nutraceuticals to enhance healing of the intestinal vile is imperative to restore optimal gut health.
